Heroes of Today

HEROES OF TODAY
Heroes of today is an 84-page magazine that seeks to inspire young people to act for a better world. Featured in the book include President Nasheed of Maldives, Director Franny Armstong, of "The Age of Stupid", Richard Branson of Virgin - all of whom I had the pleasure of meeting/seeing speak at an event. Also featured were my friends (and inspiration), Sven Heijbel of Wake Up Call and Deepa Gupta of Indian Youth Climate Network -amongst many other inspirational characters. It is humbling to be part of a line-up of outstanding characters. Questioning why I was chosen to be on this book- and why I haven't yet learned the awesome Swedish language yet.
Heroes of today is the vision of Sophy Elevall, who's life work is devoted to inspiring others to make a difference in the world. Recently she received an award as one of the “Environmental Heroes of the year” by the internet site Minplanet.se and World Wide Fund for nature, WWF. When it comes to people in this world, they can be divided into two groups. There are those who want to make a difference, and there are those who are making the difference. Which one are you?

Speaking at Forum on Global Climate Politics Nov 15

A Plaque of Appreciation from Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Nov. 15 2010

FORUM ON GLOBAL CLIMATE POLITICS NOV 15
THE Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will hold the second forum of the two-part series of the Understanding Choices Forum on climate change on Nov. 15 at the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center on Lopez Jaena Street, Cebu City.

The forum, entitled “Climate Change and the Global Climate Politics,” will highlight inputs from two international climate change negotiators for the Philippines, lawyer Antonio La Viña and Esperanza Garcia.

La Viña is the dean of the Ateneo School of Government and chairman of the United Nations Collaborative initiative on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conferences of Parties (UNFCC COP).

He will talk about the daunting issues of climate change and how we are affected at the recent “climate” of the global climate politics, particularly on the global debates and related international initiatives and negotiations being marred with controversies from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Kyoto protocol to the UNFCCC-COP 15 in Copenhagen Denmark that ended in failure, and the upcoming COP16 in Cancun, Mexico.

Garcia, founder of the Philippine Youth Climate Movement, director of Global Warming and Climate Change Initiatives for the International Youth Council and Filipino Youth Delegate to the UNFCCC COP Conference, will share her experience as a global climate youth leader.

This forum is the second part of the Living on the Edge Series: Climate Change Focus that is designed to provide a venue to heighten awareness, deepen understanding, and inspire participation and action on climate change, one of the pressing issues affecting the world today.

The forum, which will start at 1 p.m., will facilitate an exchange of ideas, inputs, and experiences on climate change. It is open to the public. For inquiries, please contact Catherine Margate at 4187234 local 105.

Philippine youth leaders raise funds to attend the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancún, Mexico

Philippine youth leaders raise funds to attend the
UN Climate Change Conference in Cancún, Mexico

(Manila – November 04, 2010) The Philippine Youth Climate Movement (PhilYCM) will be hosting a fundraising dinner this Saturday, November 6 to help Philippine youth leaders attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancún, Mexico. From November 26 to December 10, 2010, the Philippine youth delegates will be participating in the Conference of Youth (COY) and the 16th Conference of Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
2010 is a crucial year in the international effort to address climate change. The UNFCCC supports cooperative action by States to combat climate change and its impacts on humanity and ecosystems. As an ambitious and effective international response to climate change, the world will converge for COP 16 in Cancún, Mexico and continue where they left off at COP 15 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The PhilYCM is an environmental youth network that unites and mobilizes the Filipino youth towards environmental activism and responsiveness. It is committed to enhancing the role of Philippine youth in international climate negotiations. The members duly accredited by the Climate Change Commission are Esperanza Garcia, Desiree Llanos Dee, and Anna Oposa. The International Youth Climate Movement (YOUNGO) will be assisting Vivienne Zerrudo, Christopher Yu, and Karl Molina for accreditation at COP 16. They will be joining young people from around the world in Mexico to place pressure on the world's governments to reach a science-based, ambitious and equitable climate treaty that will secure our future within a stable climate and support those already affected by impacts. "This is a great opportunity to spread awareness of climate change issues to the youth, and engage them in different activities that protect the environment," said Senator Loren Legarda. “As heirs of our nation's wealth and heritage, the youth has a primary interest in protecting and conserving the environment," she added.

The fundraising dinner will be at Cravings Katipunan on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 7 PM. Tickets will be sold at PhP 1, 500.00. The proceeds will cover their airfare, accommodations, and daily expenses in Cancún.

If you are interested in sponsoring the official Philippine youth delegation, please contact Ms. Anna Oposa, PhilYCM Director for Media Relations, at aroposa@gmail.com, +63920-928-3492 (Smart), or +63915-611-6515 (Globe).

Making dreams happen.

In four days-although sleepless- I was able to pull-off producing a 42-page book supporting Global South countries ( It feels like college during finals crunch time all over again). I may not have had a day off in what may seem to be forever- my life may revolve around work- Fortunately, I love what I do and I'm immensely blessed for being able to live it.

From being a delegate of my country at COP15 UNFCCC in Copenhagen (Dec)- to traveling all over the Philippines visiting every school and university engaging Philippine youth, campaigning for Climate Change and Senator Legarda who was running for VP in the Philippine elections (Jan-May)- to mobilizing hundreds of global youth to achieve the MDG's through International Youth Council, to bringing 700 young people from all over the world to the Youth Assembly UN (May-August), and now supporting Global South countries through South-South News with Ambassador Lorenzo and preparing for the MDG Awards hosted by UN Millenium Campaign and UN Office of partnerships happening before the General Assembly in September. 2010 has been a wild ride. And its not over yet...

At 23 I never would have thought I would be doing my dream job ant my dream office space- at the top floor of a building- over looking the UN with the most beautiful view of Manhattan. Given that I have devoted so much of my passion and life to work, and have constantly tried to make the best out of every opportunity I have been fortunately given. I have also been blessed that I never really had to look for a job. I believe that people who are intensely as passionate and hard-working as I am- people see and believe in our passion and help in paving the right roads for us (I have the coolest mentors basically).

And Oh the challenges. I trust and believe in people too much, and for that, I have been taken advantage of many times. I take these challenges as they come, and should come, and I only become a stronger, better person. The best part of all of this is I have NOTHING to loose and only have EVERYTHING to gain. My strength may be just that I am a young passionate hard-working woman from a developing country. After being a single mother at 18 years of age, everything else that follows -becomes a breeze really. I am strong, I believe in myself, I am immensely blessed with family and friends who are extremely supportive, and I live life with PASSION. No one and nothing can take any of that away from me.

Evidently I love what I do, but I also don't take credit for my hard work. I am not who I am today because of me, I am who I am today because of everyone else around me who have played a supportive role, inspires me to be who I am, believes in my vision and helps me become the best person I can be. I am immensely blessed to have these people in my life. Despite all that I do and having to somehow survive dealing with me for many years now- they keep my head on the ground.

Never had I thought that my dream would come true so early in life. All I can say to you is dreams do come true, so keep on dreaming. There is no where else to go but up from here...

Here's a tour of my dream office.

Day 2 of the Youth Assembly in tears

Second day of the Youth Assembly is over today, and I was left in tears.

The International Youth Council (IYC) Networking Event at the Dag Hammarskjold Park on August 5, 2010.

It was so beautiful to see everyone from different countries having such a great time...this video gives me the chills still...

And then after this event, get this message...

“Hello Esperanza. My name is David, from the Dominican Republic of Congo. I spent all my savings and traveled 44 hours by bus and by plane from my country to be here (YAUN). I am so inspired by this experience, and I can’t wait to go back home to my country and make the change that is needed. I am from a poor country, and I have done everything that I can to be here. I am so happy, this is an experience I will never forget. I just wanted to let you know you’re doing an amazing job and you are such an inspiration in my life.”

David, WE have dedicated my life to the YA UN these past few months just so that you can be provided with the opportunities YOU deserve. Thank you for making my life and work worth living and for allowing me to share continue my passion with you. YOU are my inspiration.

Today was surreal...Last day of YA UN tomorrow....

Message from a UN Ambassador

My name is Esperanza Concepcion Garcia, I am 23 years old, I am following my passion and I am living my dream.

Yesterday, I somehow was chosen to be moderator at the 7th Annual Youth Assembly at the UN Headquarters (http://faf.org/unyouthassembly/program.htm). The people who spoke whilst moderating were all globally recognized brilliant change-makers making a difference in the world, and it was such an honor to have each and everyone of them.

On my way to the UN before I spoke, I was extremely nervous, I wasn't too confident because I wasn't in my best shape. I had gone almost a week with little/no sleep. I was so busy with everyone else, that I didn't realize I didn't have a script and only had the chance to prepare the script the night before- also with no sleep. I couldn’t even make it to the only/final rehearsal because I had lost my voice and was ridiculously sick all of last week.

When I got home tonight, I received this voicemail, from an Ambassador of the United Nations…..

“Hi Ms. Garcia I am an ambassador of the United Nations. I just want to say what a phenomenal speech you did today. Quite impressed with your heartfelt expressions of how to motivate the youth of today and to end poverty. God bless you. Hello, I am the Ambassador of (???????????) actually.... just wanted to see how you did. Congratulations.”

At first I thought, is this real?!?!?!?!(I am extremely embarrassed but I am hoping you can help in figuring out the country that the Ambassador had mentioned. Unfortunately, after playing this over, I am unable to determine the country.)

What an honor. I have been so blessed recently, with extremely supportive family and friends, and living a life that I can only dream of having.  I am a  young person, just like yourself, who happens to be lucky enough to be able to follow and live my passion.  I am speechless still...

"Interview for swedish magazine to inspire young people to act for a better world"

I was just recently interviewed by Sophy Elevall, who "devotes all her waking time trying to make this world healthier, for present and future generations." as editor for Save the Planet, a swedish magazine that seeks to inspire young people to act for a better world. These were my answers. They are long, and might bore you.

Who is Esperanza Garcia?

Esperanza Garcia is a 23-year-old Global Youth Leader & Climate Change Advocate from the Philippines currently working in New York. She is Co-Founder and Director of Global Warming & Climate Change Initiatives for the International Youth Council. She is the founder of the Philippine Youth Climate Movement, traveling all over the Philippines awarding Climate Hero's and mobilizing Youth to take action on Climate Change. Working for Senator Loren Legarda, she is a Climate Change consultant for the Philippine Senate Oversight Climate Change Committee. She was an official delegate of the Philippines at the UNFCCC COP15 conference in Copenhagen. She was a journalist for UNICEF's 'Unite for Climate' Campaign & accredited 'Climate Voice' writer for Oxfam covering news for the UN General Assembly & Clinton Global Initiative. She is the Development Associate of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, a UN accredited organization. She is currently focusing her efforts as an active member of the Planning Committee for the upcoming 7th Annual Youth Assembly at the United Nations in August of 2010.

What is your mission/task/assignment?

With the Youth Assembly at the UN, my job entails mobilizing young people from all over the world who seek practical ways to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, global networking and social entrepreneurship skills as well as meeting with and contributing to civil society formally affiliated with the United Nations.

With the International Youth Council, we seek to empower the next generation of leaders by providing them with the training, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed and bring together and support young leaders from around the world in pursuit of partnership, progress, and the Millennium Development Goals.

As an advocate of Climate Change, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to represent my country as an official delegate at the UNFCCC COP15 conference in Copenhagen last December. I am lucky that my passion is being shared and supported by one of the most influential people in my country, Senator Loren Legarda. With her support, in four months, I was able to travel all over my country to enage over 30,000 young people on Climate Change and developed the Philippine Youth Climate Movement. PHILYCM was inspired by the International Youth Climate Movement, which I had the opportunity to work with, who's goal is to empower youth to take their voices in to decision making platforms.

Which movement/organization are you involved in?

Current involvements:
• Co-Founder and Director of International Youth Council
• Climate Change Consultant for the Oversight Climate Change Committee of Philippine Senate
• Development Associate of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation
• Founder/President of the Philippine Youth Climate Movement
• Volunteer for the International Youth Climate Movement (YOUNGO)
• Member of the Planning Committee for the7th Annual Youth Assembly at the United Nations

Do you like what you’re doing?

Living the life of public service, I know that I am passionately giving all of myself to what I firmly believe in. I haven't once questioned whether “I like what I am doing,” I do what I do because I have no other choice but to. My job doesn't feel like a job and because I love what I do, everything that needs to be done just follows.

Would you rather do something else?

I would rather do more than what I am already doing. I am mad as hell knowing that there are 1 billion people in poverty right now, but I know that I can do something about it, and I know that more work needs to be done. I would like to join those who passionately feel the same way about this issue and encourage others to join us in helping others who need help the most.

Somehow, people around me are aware that I am an extremely passionate person, because of that, opportunities fall in my lap and life naturally falls into place. Ofcourse, there are challenges, and when they come, they are always immensely intense and overwhelming. I encourage challenges to happen in life because it allows me to develop a thick skin. As ambitious as I am, in order to achieve what I want to achieve and do what I believe in my heart is right, god knows I will be needing an even thicker skin. If something else falls in my life, so be it, the path is paving its way for me, I am merely walking through it.

If there was something I need to rather focus on however, it would be reminding myself to do the basic things in life, most times, I always leave sleep and exercise out of the agenda. Luckily, I eat right because I am pescetarian, other than that, it fazes me that I always forget to sleep most days in the week.

Why are you doing the things you do?

I am greatly inspired by the youth and firmly believe that it is our generation that can avert the global crisis. More than anything, my life revolves around my daughter. At the end of the day, my actions resonates her life. I believe every parent can relate when I say that the world that I am building, and everything that I do, is for my child.

What is your driving force?

I attribute a lot of who I am today to where I am from, the people who have raised me, and having a daughter at such a young age. I have compassion for people in poverty because I see hungry people in my country everyday , and I can no longer pretend that I am immune to seeing this because I know I can help. I know I can help because I was raised by people who devoted their whole lives to helping other people in my country. My father, Winston Garcia as the President of GSIS, my Grandfather, Congressman Pablo Garcia as a two-termer Congressman of the Third District Cebu, three-termer Governor of Cebu. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Congress of the Republic of the Philippines, my aunt, Gov. Gwen Garcia, who has the reputation of being the best Governor in the history of Cebu, my namesake, inspiration, and Grandmother, Judge Esperanza Garcia, and many more people in my family who inspire me to be as ambitious as I can be, so I can help others around me. My country believes in my family, because they have proven that they can make a difference, and have made the desired changes, and I am proud, blessed, and honored to be part of a lineage of brilliant characters.

Going through single motherhood in my teens allowed me to mature faster, but also empathize with people. Having felt a surmount amount of pain and only to be given the best thing that had ever happened to me justified hope. Hence, I empathize with people undergoing through pain, and know that there is always hope for them as well.

Do you have any role models or a specific person who has inspired you a lot?

I have been blessed with great mentors who are globally-respected. Other than those who have inspired me in my family, there are the mentors whom I have met in life who are constantly encouraging, providing me with valuable advice and endless opportunities. It is an honor to have each and every one of my mentors, and it fazes me that I am able to simply call any them on the phone just to well, chat! Some of the mentors who hold a dear place in my heart are the people listed below, and I have had the honor to work with each and every one of them:

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Chairman of IPCC, Director General of TERI; Rajendra Kumar Pachauri. Shared Nobel Peace Prize with the IPCC and Al Gore.
I met Dr. Pachauri at the UN last August. I recall watching him on CNN one day and the next day sitting in front of him interviewing him for a video that was being made for the UN General Assembly. It was surreal. It is still so surreal that since then “Patchy” and I have maintained a great relationship since and he remains a great mentor. We share mutual passion for the environment and he has always been encouraging of my goals in life.

Senator Loren Legarda of the Republic of the Philippines: I am lucky that my passion is being shared and supported by one of the most influential people in my country, Senator Loren Legarda. With her support, in four months, I was able to travel all over my country to enage over 30,000 young people on Climate Change and developed the Philippine Youth Climate Movement.

Ambassador Francis Lorenzo from the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic as his intern, I worked on the presentation for the Second Committee of the General Assembly among other things. He has always very encouraging and supportive.

Dr. Tony La Viña; Dean of Ateneo School of Government. I had the honor to work with him durin the UNFCCC COP15 Conference where he was the Chairman of the REDD negotiations. Since then he has been providing me with the most valuable advice in life.

Lucia Kaiser, a well respected individual in the entertainment-industry , she is a generous woman who embodies strength, and has taught me a lot . She has graciously helped me during the Youth Assembly. She is helping in developing a panel for the YA that she is moderating.

Patrick Sciaratta; Exectuive Director of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation and Co-Founder of the Youth Assembly at the UN. I am where I am today because he believes in and gives opportunities to youth leaders like myself.

I am blessed that my passion and goals are in line with the mission and vision of the organizations I am involved with, I work with and meet brilliant and inspiring individuals, I have the honor to have globally respected mentors who help encourage my work, give me advice, and endless opportunties, more than anything, I have supportive family and friends who bring me back to reality when I need a wake-up call. I am always overwhelmed by the support & encouragement I am receiving daily from people around the world to pursue my passion further.

"You are a living magnet; you attract into your life people, situations and circumstances that are in harmony with your dominant thoughts. Whatever you dwell on in the conscious grows in your experience."- Brian Tracy

Your best memory/experience as a ”climate change-heroe”?

Working for Senator Legarda during the 2010 Philippine elections allowed me to see my beautiful country and travel all over the Philippines to campaign for Climate Change. We searched in every region, school and university seeking "Climate Hero's."As it was the elections, I had to constantly travel, I recall being in 6 cities in one day each at least 2 hours away from each other. I had lived in the Philippines my whole life, and only at the age of 23 did I have the chance to fully experience how beautiful my country is.

Are young people engaged in these problems/questions in your country?

As I working during the Philippine elections from January – May of 2010, Philippines was undergoing El Nino. It was very interesting to be actively engaged in a developing country at this time as well as see the harsh impacts of Climate Change and engage with those who are being affected by it. Admittedly, I had met the people who do not know that Climate Change exists. I met people who were going through Climate Change impacts without realizing that it was effects of Climate Change. I have met a farmer with a family of 11, who could not feed his family because his crops were being affected by the drought.

What would you like to say to those who DON’T act on climate change or for a better world?

I am not in the position to change people's minds on climate change, especially those who feel cynical about the effects. However, I would like for that person to meet with my friend Constance Okollet. Constance is a peasant farmer from Tororo district in Eastern Uganda and a mother of seven. She is a community activist and chairperson of the Osukura United Women network which includes 40 regional groups in Uganda's Osukura Subcounty. In 2007, heavy rains destroyed the homes and food supply of her village displacing all of its residents. The people in the community suffered from hunger and thirst. Once the situation stabilized, the community was dealt a second blow and the drought dried up crops and wells. There are hundreds and millions of people undergoing similar situations like Constance. Currently 3 Billion people live on less than $2/day. 24000 children die/day in poverty. 1.4 M die/year from lack of safe drinking water. 121 M are out of education worldwide. These are all preventable, and I know I can do something about it. I want to join those who are already doing something about it, and asking others who can help, to join with us. We can't do this alone.
